Sausalito is easily one of my favorite towns in the Bay area! Sausalito is a gorgeous town right along the water with beautiful spots for hiking, photography, fishing, sailing, shopping, and exploring! Rich in history this city is a place worth seeing!
Located in Marin County Sausalito is a beautiful waterfront town north of San Francisco. The northern end of the famous Golden Gate Bridge sits on Sausalito. During World War II the town was used for military and shipbuilding. There are a lot of theories on how this lovely town received its name but it is speculated that its origin was derived by the willow trees that grew along its waters. Today, you can still explore and see the abandoned military buildings in the headlands. Today Sausalito is known for its wealth and artistic culture. Sausalito has a beautiful historical portion which has picturesque homes and waterfront stores. Sausalito offers the most incredible views of the San Francisco city line and Angel Island. Sausalito is right next to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
Where to park
Parking in the historical portion of the city is easy. You will see lots of meter options available. I like to park in the parking lot where there is an hourly fee you pay. I have found parking here is always easy to get to and the rates are pretty fair. Check out Sausalito’s Parking for Visitors for more information.
Where to stay
There are tons of options when it comes to hotels. Hotels are a bit on the expensive side here so be prepared to spend more due to the location. The Inn Above the Tide is a top-rated hotel in the area and offers a gorgeous view of the bay.
How to get here
The easiest and cheapest way to get there is by driving. I wouldn’t recommend driving through a Francisco here since there may be more traffic going that route which will eat up the time you can spend exploring the city. If you are coming from San Francisco I would recommend taking the ferry across the water. Go to the San Fransico Ferry Building and catch the Golden Gate Ferry. It is a stress-free option!
Weather
The weather in Sausalito is generally a bit cooler than the rest of Northern California. It is very similar to any Bay area city. It can be chilly and windy, or sunny and warm. Be sure to check the weather forecast before your trip over to make sure you are prepared!
How to dress
It is generally a bit cooler in the morning than in the afternoon. I’d recommend bringing light jackets or sweaters and jeans. Dress in layers, in case you get cool or hot.
THE BEST THINGS TO DO
Vista Point
Vista Point offers my favorite view of the Golden Gate Bridge! To get to Vista Point you hike to the location. It is a pretty simple hike. Once you reach Vista Point, there is a restroom and some abandoned military buildings which you can explore. The view from Vista Pint can be a little foggy so be sure to come after the morning fog has cleared up. The weather is usually windy and it chilly at the top so dress accordingly.
Kirby Cove
Kirby Cove is another lovely viewpoint of the Golden Gate Bridge. Enjoy the hike down to the beach for a lovely beach view of the bridge. Usually, there is a swing at this location but on the particular day that I wen the swing was down.
Black Sand Beach
Black Sands Beach is a wonderful beach known for its unique dark-colored sand grains. The beach is also known as Bonita Beach since it is located in the Bonita Cove. Check out my article on Black Sand Beach for more information about getting there.
Point Bonita Lighthouse
Point Bonita Lighthouse can be seen in the distance of Black Sands Beach. Both the lighthouse and the beach are located in Bonita Cove. The lighthouse is open to visitors on Sundays and Mondays from 12:30-3:30 PM. Check out my article on Point Bonita Lighthouse for more information about this stunning place!
Houseboat Communities
One of the things Sausalito is famous for is its beautiful houseboat communities. The houseboat communities are protected in the safe harbors of its waters. These houseboats line the safe harbors of the Richardson Bay. The houseboats are all artistically designed and have a very free-spirited vibe to them. You can check out some of the houseboats communities at either Galilee Harbor or Waldo Point Harbor. Off of Bridgeway Blvd, you will find a dock between Gate 5 and Gate 6 1/2. Only explore if the gates are open for visitors. As a reminder please be respectful of the community who lives there. Remember no loud noises, no pets, and please do not smoke.
Waterfront Stores
Beautiful waterfront stores line the historical portion of the town. There are many fun tourist shops and eateries along the historical portion that are worth checking out!
Lappert’s Ice Cream
A local favorite Lappert’s Ice Cream is the perfect spot to grab a sweet treat! They offer a variety of flavors and ice cream creations. They even have some really good sorbets (non-dairy). I recommend the rainbow sorbet or the coconut sorbet they’re my favorite!
