Black Sand Beach is a small hidden beach that stretches many miles along the coast of Sausalito. This beach is famously known for its black sand. The sand is not very fine in texture, it is more like very small pebbles. On the beach, there are a bunch of beautiful rock formations which are great for interesting photo backdrops!
Who Goes Here?
Since this beach is more hidden, it is mostly locals who enjoy the beach regularly. There is some tourist who comes to explore and see for themselves the unique black sand that covers the coastline. This beach is perfect for those wanting to admire its unique beauty. It is not commonly used for surfing or other in-water activities. It is perfect for hiking, photography, fishing, and strolls along the beach. I have read in many places that this is a nude ( clothing optional) beach but every time I have come here everyone I have seen has been fully clothed. I have seen on numerous occasions families bringing their children here to admire the beautiful shoreline and black sand grains. I have heard there is a pet policy of no dogs allowed at this beach, but I have seen individuals bring their dogs every time I have gone here. I think as long as you are respectful of the beach and the people around you by cleaning up after your dog, no one will mind if you bring along your furry friend.
What is it?
As you approach the beach you will hear the crashing of the waves and smell the salty ocean air. You can see the beautiful coastline in the distance and the beach covered in black sand grains. The sand is warm and not very fine. If you pick up a scoop of the sand in your hand you will notice it is made up o very small pebbles. Walking on the sand did not hurt my feet, but I know a few people in my group commented on how it hurt the bottoms of their feet. The water is cold but very lovely to walk across. There are many bigger rocks and some shells which you can look for. If you pay attention you will see seagulls and pelicans flying overhead. It is windy so be prepared to bring warm cozy layers. I recommend bringing a pair of gloves and a hat. There are lots of stunning rock formations on the beach which are perfect for exploring and photography.
When is the best time to visit?
The best seasons to visit are in the Spring and Summer. Since it is located in the San Francisco Bay, the weather is cold. It is a cold/ windy beach make sure to dress in layers and be prepared for chilly weather. On this particular day, the weather was rather foggy which I thought just added to its unique beauty. Surely this is a beach unlike any other!
Where is it located and how to get there?
The beach is located in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, on the east side of Bonita cover near point Bonita lighthouse. To get here, simply type in “Black Sand Beach” on your navigation and it will take you there. If you can not locate it using navigation, go to Conzelman Rd, Sausalito, CA 94965. Drive into the Golden Gate National Recreation Area on the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. You will need to head west onto Conzelman Rd. Do not be alarmed, it will become a one-way road. Drive until you reach a small parking lot on the left which reads “Upper Fisherman’s Trailhead.” In the parking lot, there are restrooms available. The parking lot is rather small and can only fit a few cars, so be prepared to park along the road in the event of the parking lot being full. Access to the beach is free. From the parking lot, it is a .2 mile hike down to the beach. Although it is not a far hike it will wear you out. It is full of wooden steps. Be warned! I went here with a group between the ages of 17-25 and we were exhausted going from the beach to the car. The steps will make you tired. The trail is definitely easier going down than up.
Why is the sand black?
According to USA TODAY, Black Sand is a special type of sand that is usually located in beaches close to volcanic activity. The black sand on this beach gets its color from the different types of minerals here which contain a darker color than silica sand. The darker sand weights heavier than the silica sand and can stay put on the beach even after the strong energy waves crash over them. Since the silica sand is lighter in weight, the waves carry it away which is why the beach is only covered in black grains of sand.
One of my favorite beaches in this area. Worth the small hike down.
